Devon is one of the largest counties in the UK, and that isn’t surprising given the huge amount there is to do. With multiple coasts, endless attractions, and multiple cities to visit, you’ll be spoilt for choice no matter what you’re in the mood to do.
Boasting two popular and hugely influential cities, Devon is truly a cosmopolitan county. The county town, Exeter, is a centre for business and tourism in the region, with thousands coming every year to visit the spectacular Exeter Cathedral. Established over 2000 years ago, the city is filled with sites of historical significance, from Medieval underground passages to the well known Roman Wall.
If you’re looking for another urban landscape in the area, you can also check out Plymouth, a popular port city strongly influenced by its seafaring history. Often used by tourists as a base to check out Dartmoor (more on that below!), Plymouth is a great destination in its own right, with plenty of shopping opportunities and historical landmarks like the Royal Citadel.
However, if you want to step away from the rush of the city, you should definitely take a trip to see the ancient forests and prehistoric structures of Dartmoor. Stretching over 368 square miles, this area of unspoilt nature is perfect for climbers and cavers, as well as those who just want a gentle walk through a peaceful and undisturbed part of the county.
Devon is the only county in the UK to have not just one, but two coastlines, with the English Channel to the South and the Irish sea and Bristol Channel to the North. One of the most well known and popular holiday destinations in the UK, the beautiful English Riviera is filled to the brim with charming resort towns, sunny beaches, and family attractions like theme parks and waterparks.
Alternatively, you can check out the serene North Coast, that has numerous beaches considered Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) – perfect for those with an interest in watersports and stunning vistas.
